Dog Rehoming

Local authorities operate dog shelters to rehome dogs that have been delivered to the shelter.

The Carlow-Kilkenny Dog Shelter is a modern facility which is a joint venture between Carlow County Council and Kilkenny County Council, from which the Carlow-Kilkenny Dog Warden Service operates.

It is situated just off the N10 at Garryduff, Paulstown, Co Kilkenny.  The Carlow-Kilkenny Dog Warden Service is funded by both Local Authorities.

For dog licensing enquiries or payment of fines for offences under the Control of Dogs Act 1986 please contact Carlow County Council at 059 9170300.

Dog Licences can be purchased at any Post Office or on line at licences.ie.  An annual dog licence is €20 and a lifetime dog licence is €140.

Please note that a General Dog Licence (€400 per year) can only be purchased directly from Carlow County Council. A General Dog Licence is suitable for those dog owners who have more than 20 dogs in their pack (i.e. Hunt Clubs and greyhound trainers etc.)

Under the Control of Dogs Act 1986, as amended by the Control of Dogs (Amendment) Act 1992, local authorities are responsible for the control of dogs.

Local authorities have the power to appoint dog wardens, provide dog shelters, seize dogs, impose on-the-spot fines and take court proceedings against owners.

You can be disqualified from keeping a dog if you have been convicted of cruelty to a dog under the Protection of Animals Acts 1911 and 1965.
