Fire Safety Guidelines

Local authorities prepare guidelines for property owners and occupiers on fire safety standards including identifying fire safety precautions, maintaining training records and inspecting fire safety active systems and first aid equipment.

This following guide provides detailed information in relation to responsibilities under Section 18(2) of the Fire Services Acts 1981 & 2003.

This NDFEM guide is aimed at all who are in charge of buildings that are not dwelling houses.  This 2023 document supports the older premises specific suite of guides published by central government over the years. 

The guide provides significant useful detail on the various fire protection aspects of buildings such as fire doors, smoke vents, fire detection and alarm, emergency lighting and fire safety management in addition to a commentary on the application / interpretation of Section’s 18(2) and (3) of the Act.
