Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What cars must be tested and how often ?
All four year old cars are eligible for testing. Test Certificates are valid for up to 2 years from the date the test is due to the registration anniversary date two years later.
  2. Will I be notified when my test is due ?
NCTS will contact owners of eligible motor vehicles based on official vehicle registration records in advance of the anniversary date of first registration of your car. You will be offered a provisional appointment for the test that must either be confirmed or rearranged by using our on-line booking service or calling our LoCall booking number. If you do not hear from NCTS and think your car may be eligible for the NCT, then please phone us on 1890 412 413 or you can check our on-line service by simply typing in your car registration number.
  3. Where do I get my car tested ?
There are 43 NCT Centres located throughout Ireland established solely for the purposes of car testing. They are completely independent of the garage and motor trade. Individual motorists with cars eligible for testing will be advised of the Centre that is nearest to them, but they may choose any Centre within the country.
  4. How much does the test cost and what are the payment methods ?
The car test fee is €49.00 and a re-test costs €27.50 ( both fees are inclusive of VAT and maybe subject to change ). Re-tests, which do not require the use of test equipment, will be free. Free re-tests cover minor items, for example, a visual inspection to check that faulty windscreen wipers have been replaced. NCTS will accept cash, personal cheque, all major credit cards and laser cards.
  5. When can I book a re-test if i fail my NCT ?
All re-tests must be booked within 21 days of the initial test. Re-test which do not require the use of a test lane, will be free of charge.
