Minister Ó Cuív presents Gaelchultúr Recognition
MINISTER for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív T.D. presented Carlow Local Authorities with the Gaelchultúr Recognition celebrating support for Irish language and culture on Thursday, 14th January, 2010 in County Offices, Athy Road, Carlow. He presented the Leas Cathaoirleach, Councillor Fergal Brown and County Manager, Mr. Tom Barry with a Bog Oak sculpture entitled "An Preachán (The Raven)" which recalls the bravery and prowess of the mortally wounded Setanta who stood upright against a rock and no enemy would dare approach him until the raven landed on his shoulder to confirm he was dead.
Fáinní Nua and Certificates were presented to people who completed Gaelchultúr courses in Carlow and the County Manager, Mr. Tom Barry replied to the presentation of the recognition. Leas Cathaoirleach of the County Council, Councillor Fergal Browne, welcomed the Minister and Darren O Rodaigh spoke on behalf of Gaelchultúr Teo. Bríde de Róiste, speaking for Glór Cheatharlach, explained the background to Irish language classes in Carlow.
“The Carlow local authorities are delighted to have taken the opportunity to embrace bi-lingualism, to give staff and elected members, as well as members of the local community, opportunities to learn or improve Irish, to become more involved in Irish social and cultural life in the administrative area, to increase bi-lingual signage in our offices and to encourage bi-lingual signage and Irish place names on new development projects,” said County Manager, Tom Barry.
Minister O Cuív congratulated Carlow Local Authorities on their commitment to date, encouraged them to continue and said that Carlow’s efforts should be a blueprint for other local authorities. The County Manager presented the Minister with signed copies of a number of contemporary Carlow Irish language books including Banana Bean Sí agus Scéalta Eile by Deirdre Brennan, Turas go Bun na Spéire by Rita Kelly and Lucinda Sly (the historical novel in Irish about the last woman hanged in Carlow) by Maidhc Dainín Ó Sé. Both Deirdre and Rita were present and met the Minister.

MAKE SURE YOUR HAVE A VOTE
Every local authority in Ireland is responsible for compiling and publishing a Register of Electors each year for its area. Anyone can inspect this Register and it is available in all local authority offices, post offices, Garda stations and public libraries. There are certain rules in place regarding who can vote in Ireland. For example, you must be a certain age and must have been resident in Ireland for a certain length of time before the Register comes into effect. In addition, your citizenship will determine in which elections you can vote in Ireland.
During the months of August and September Carlow Local Authorities will carry out house-to-house enquiries for the purpose of preparing the draft register.
The draft register is publised on 1st November and is made available for examination up to 25th November. You are invited to check the draft during this period to make sure that you are correctly registered. Any errors or omissions in the draft should be brought immediately to the attention of the registration authority.
The final register is published on 1st February and comes into force for a year on the 15th February.
