What is Visualise Carlow

Visualise Carlow brings three projects to Carlow every year to promote our forthcoming visual arts centre. The programme is now recognised as one of the most exciting public art programmes in the country. Visualise Carlow, through temporary public artworks curated by local, national and international curators will ensure that the forthcoming visual arts centre has established local, national and international connections thus ensuring Carlow maintains its national reputation as a centre for visual arts.

Douglas Gordon & Philippe Parreno : Zidane, A 21st Century Portrait

FEBRUARY 06 - MARCH 20 VISUAL ART.  This work is now achieving legendary status, as a superb work of art, but also as work which bridges the gap between the seemingly enclosed world of contemporary visual art with the universally recongised world of international football. Parreno and Gordon worked in collaboration to produce this film about world-renowned French football player Zinedine Zidane. The video watches Zidane's movement throughout an entire game, and captures Zidane in a multi-dimensional space leading the spectator to experience the sensations and movements of an athlete. It comprises a dynamic cinematic masterpiece as well as having huge social and cultural nuances that will touch and interest a broad audience base. In 2005 Carlow Arts Office, through the programming strand Visualise, brought Douglas Gordon to the town to make a site-specific live art work. This programming strand was designed to lead into the construction and operation of VISUAL, and now this opportunity to bring this work to Carlow brings this project full circle. VISUAL is working with Douglas Gordon and his studio in the presentation of this work.

Open Window

Open Windows – by Denis Roche working for and with the residents of St.Dymphnas Hospital in Carlow.  This project will build on the success of artist Denis Roche who devised for the Open Window Project and patients of the National Bone Marrow Transplant Centre in St.James Hospital, Dublin.

  1. This Carlow Local Authorities Arts Office project will take place throughout 2010 with two artwork elements : Untitled Contract - In this work the artist engages with the patient to identify a location/image/landscape which is significant to the patient in some way. The artist will then travel to that location and will make a visual document of the site through still image, video or audio. The resulting work will then be
shown to the patient on a screen located in St.Dymphnas.
  2. Moving Windows - In this work an artist will work to make a visual document of their day to day activities or moments of inspiration which will then be relayed to the screen in St.Dymphnas.
