Library Activities and Services for Teenagers
Carlow County Library targets and involves teenagers in the following activities and services:
- Work Experience Placements: Transition year students from all Carlow Second Level Schools participate in Work Placements with Carlow County Library. They gain experience in a wide variety of tasks and library services. Transition Year students also volunteer to assist with activities for children of 12 years and under in Carlow Central Library.
- Research Seminars for Senior Cycle Secondary Students: Seminars on research techniques for the Leaving Certificate History Curriculum are held each autumn in Carlow Central Library. Students participate in follow on visits to the Local Studies Department throughout the academic year. A special emphasis is placed on the www.askaboutireland.ie website and its relevance for Local Studies topics.
- General Knowledge Quiz: The General Knowledge Quiz for second level students is held annually during Library Ireland Week in March. Interest in this quiz has grown over its three years in existence and this year again a lively contest ensued.
- Library Access Programme for First Year Students: This programme was first introduced in 2005 when over 200 first year students took part. It consists of three consecutive weekly visits to the Central Library where students are introduced to the County Library Service, arrange membership and are given introductory talks on Local Studies and the Reference Department as well as the benefits of Library Membership. A feature of this programme was the Survey conducted to identify young people’s attitudes to the Library Service and their recommendations for the future. We are pleased to report that the outcome showed that the students were very positive about the Library Service.
- Summer Camps Programme: Young people cooperate with the Carlow Regional Youth Services in the provision and supervision of Summer Camps which include visits to the Carlow Central Library by over 300 children under 12 years during July and August each year. They act as stewards for the indoor games held in the Shaw Room at Carlow Central Library and generally support the children in availing of Library services as part of their visit.
- Services to teenagers in the Youthreach Programme: Teenagers who return to Full time education through the Youthreach Programme are introduced to the Library Service and supported in their educational programmes throughout the year. These students are young people who had originally dropped out of mainstream education. This is a Social Inclusion Project.
- General Services: Teenagers are also served through the Teen Section in all service points at Carlow Central Library, Tullow Library and Muinebheag Library. A comprehensive selection of teen reads in fiction is provided. Teenagers also benefit from Free Library Membership, Free Internet Access. Language Learning Facilities and Study places.
For those students who are embarking on a Special Topic for Leaving Certificate History, Carlow County Library is a great place to start. To begin with, here is some good advice.
