A new reading programme designed to develop your child's language skills has been published by Pops Resources. These books are now available at our libraries in Carlow, Muinebheag and Tullow and can be borrowed in the usual way.

Local Author Launched Book in Carlow Library
Pauric Brennan successfully launched the first book in his "Order of the Dragon" trilogy called "Question of Time" on Saturday 26th July at 3.00 pm in the George Bernard Shaw Room, Carlow County Library.

Helping your children to become confident readers.
Reading is one of the most important skills for life. Parents are nowadays more involved than ever in helping their children to become effective readers. The good news is that the Carlow County Library Service is building up even more resources to enable children to read confidently and parents will obtain much useful guidance and support when they access our libraries in Carlow, Muinebheag and Tullow.
Recommended Books by Irish Authors
Irish authors are very popular, not only in their home country but also abroad. The stories listed below are all by Irish authors for boys and girls aged from 9 – 12 years. They are exciting, well written and best of all are available at your library.
- Walter Speazlebud by David Donohue. The main character is called Walter. He is so clever at spelling backwards that his grandfather says he has the power of Noitanigami or backwards imagination. This power leads him into all sorts of adventures
- Run to the Ark by Tom Mc Caughren. Those who are interested in animals and the dangers they face will love this book.
- The Wish List by Eoin Colfer. This book is about Meg Finn, a troublemaker by nature. She gets into a lot of troublesome situations. Can the Wish list come to her aid.
- Fields of Home by Marita Conlon Mc Kenna. This tells the story of Eily, Michael and Peggy who remember their hard lives during the Famine years.
Encyclopaedia Britannica Online
Britannica Junior is a useful online encyclopaedia especially designed for children while more in depth information can be accessed using Britannica Student. To open Britannica online, click on either link above and type in the barcode on the back of your plastic library membership card. Britannica provides information on a wide range of topics and can prove a valuable housework aid.
Ask About Ireland
Through the Student Zone on the askaboutireland website children can search for information via their class or subject or alternatively click on the map of Ireland to explore any county. In the Carlow section, there are three topics to discover while useful images of Carlow Castle and the Sugar Factory can be found under the link aspects of Carlow. By selecting Carlow County Library from the list of places, further images can be accessed. For images of wildlife and various habitats choose the Flora and Fauna link, while selecting architecture link provides images of notable buildings in Carlow. All of these available images can be useful additions to school projects.
