Carlow Library Book Club
The Book Club has proved very successful since its creation and has been running now for four years. Participants meet once a month in Carlow Central Library on a Thursday evening to discuss a chosen title. This is a great opportunity for people with a love of reading to share their opinions on a particular title. Reading by its nature can be a solitary pastime but the Book Club introduces a social aspect to it where people meet and discuss a selected book.
People also have the opportunity to write reviews.
Since its inception there have been 2 author visits – Tara Heavey, local writer and John Connolly well-known crime thriller author.
Also in the past, members of the Club have spoken on the Marianne Finucane Show.
Some of the books which have been discussed over the years are as follows:
Tempting,challenging and not wholly satisfying........
Quarantine
Jim Crace
Penguin Books.
The opening paragraph really whets the appetite : one reads on full of "great expectations".An intriguing cast of characters inhabits the desert landscape. The bully Musa,on the verge of death, and his abused pregnant wife Miri have been abandoned by their trading caravan.A quartet of pilgrims, all seeking epiphany, are embarking on the traditional 40 day fast.Marta craves pregnancy partly to assuage the anger of another abusive husband.Aphas - an old man dieing of cancer - hopes for healing. Shim, the handsome Gentile, seeks enlightenment. The little wanderer, mute and resourceful, "the badu" is ever near. In the background - oddly,a secondary character - is the enigmatic figure of Jesus....but is he the real Jesus? Musa makes a "miraculous" recovery - possibly healed by Jesus - and promptly resumes his bullying ways, harassing and tormenting not just Miri but the others as well.
All of this we know after just 60 pages. The next hundred or so pages are heavy going. There is little action and less development of plot or characters. Perhaps the sparse precise prose reflects the harsh soporific conditions of the wilderness fast.
In the final chapters, however, the action resumes and a happy ending - of sorts - ensues. Jesus dies after 30 days but is - possibly - alive again ! Shim finds enlightenment in the desert fast, as he does everywhere. Aphas is "walking with a new authority". Miri has given Musa his comeuppance and grasped her own independence.Marta is pregnant and happy about it in spite of the horrific circumstances. A challenging, cryptic demanding read persuades us in the end to find "......the evening peace that's brokered not by a god but by the rocks and clays themselves........."
