You can do all motor tax and driving licence business by post saving yourself time and travel costs. Ensure all your documentation is in order and post to:

Motor Tax Office,
Carlow County Council,
Athy road,
Carlow.

We will endeavour to process postal applications speedily. The requirements for the different licence types are detailed below.

Learner Permit ( 1st )

  1. A completed learner permit application form.
  2. Birth certificate.
  3. Marriage certificate ( if appropriate ).
  4. A medical report for classes C, C1, D, D1, EC, EC1, ED and ED1.
  5. An eyesight report for classes A, A1, B, EB and W. The report must be issues at most four week prior to application.
  6. Fee of €15. This covers 2 years.
  7. Two photographs signed on the back.

Learner Permit ( 2nd )

  1. A completed learner permit application form.
  2. Old licence. If previous license is not available a lost license declaration stamped at the Garda Station is required.
  3. Fee of €15. This covers 2 years.
  4. Two photographs signed on the back.

Learner Permit ( 3rd )

  1. A completed learner permit application form.
  2. Failure certificate ( valid for two years ) and a letter confirming date of test appointment.
  3. Old licence. If previous licence is not available a lost license declaration stamped at the Garda Station is required.
  4. Fee of €15. This covers 2 years.
  5. Two photographs signed on the back.

Driving Licence

  1. Application form D401. Please ensure to sign the label on page 3 of this form.
  2. Two photographs signed on the back.
  3. Your current or most recent driving licence and or learner permit
  4. Appropriate fee of €5 ( 1 year license ) or €15 ( 3 year license ) or €25 ( 10 year license ) or €25 for a license up to age 70 ( not more than 10 years ).
  5. A certificate of competency if converting from learner permit to full.
  6. Medical report for categories C1, C, D1, D, EC1, EC, ED1, ED for any applicant aged 70 years and over

Exchange Driving Licence

  1. Full licence from other Country. Recognised exchange Countries are Austria, Australia, Belgium, Capital Territory, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Isle of Man, Italy, Japan, Jersey, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tasmania, United Kingdom..
  2. Full licence application form.
  3. Exchange of driver licence form D305 and D900.
  4. Two photographs signed on the back.
  5. Appropriate fee.
